Technical guide on pixel binarization, boundary edge tracing, and Bezier curve fitting.
Raster graphics (PNG, JPEG, WebP) represent images as a discrete two-dimensional grid of color pixels. Scaling raster bitmaps beyond their native dimensions causes pixelation, blurriness, and severe aliasing artifacts. Vectorization transforms discrete pixel clusters into continuous mathematical curve representations (SVG paths) defined by cubic Bezier polynomials, providing infinite scalability with zero resolution loss.
Vectorization begins by converting the 32-bit RGBA pixel buffer into an 8-bit single-channel luminance field using the standard ITU-R BT.601 perceptual formula: Y = 0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B. An adaptive thresholding comparator classifies each pixel into binary states (0 = background, 1 = foreground), producing a deterministic discrete boolean matrix.
The binary matrix is traversed using contour tracing algorithms (such as the Moore-Neighbor or Marching Squares edge evaluation). When a foreground transition is detected, the tracer traverses adjacent boundary pixels in clockwise sequence, extracting ordered coordinate vertices representing closed outer hulls and internal counter-holes.
Raw boundary contours contain thousands of discrete single-pixel steps. The Douglas-Peucker algorithm simplifies redundant colinear vertices within an epsilon tolerance threshold. Consecutive simplified points are then fitted into smooth cubic Bezier segments (C x1 y1, x2 y2, x y) by minimizing squared perpendicular Euclidean error, producing smooth, compact SVG path data.
