Zero visual degradation. Re-encodes pure pixel buffer without binary tags.
Protect user privacy and remove unnecessary image byte overhead. Inspect binary EXIF, IPTC, XMP markers and latitude/longitude tags, then strip all metadata clean with zero visual loss via hardware-accelerated canvas rasterization.
Zero visual degradation. Re-encodes pure pixel buffer without binary tags.
Technical guide on binary image segments, privacy leaks, and lossless canvas stripping.
Digital cameras and smartphones automatically embed extensive metadata into photographic files (JPEG APP1 markers, PNG text chunks, WebP EXIF sub-chunks). This metadata frequently includes high-precision GPS coordinates (accurate to meters), camera serial numbers, facial detection parameters, and thumbnail buffers. Uploading un-sanitized imagery exposes users to physical geolocation tracking and inflates document byte weight.
JPEG streams organize auxiliary data into application markers ranging from APP0 (0xFFE0) to APP15 (0xFFEF). The EXIF specification defines APP1 (0xFFE1) containing a TIFF header with Image File Directories (IFDs). GPS coordinates are stored in a dedicated GPSInfo IFD (Tag 0x8825) using rational coordinate formats (degrees, minutes, seconds).
When an image is drawn onto an HTML5 2D Canvas context, the browser rasterizes pure pixel values into an uncompressed RGBA pixel buffer. Re-encoding via canvas.toBlob() or canvas.toDataURL() generates a clean JPEG or WebP header containing only necessary frame headers (SOF0, DHT, DQT) and entropy-coded scan data (SOS), discarding all EXIF, XMP, and IPTC segments without altering visual pixels.
Embedded EXIF metadata and preview thumbnails can add between 15KB and 120KB of overhead to a single photo. In high-traffic web applications, stripping metadata from user-generated content reduces CDN egress bandwidth by up to 18% while complying with GDPR and CCPA privacy standards.
